“These young women simply need to become aware that they can be leaders and that the arts are accessible to them if they know how to seek and find the right resources”, said Marita De La Torre, Executive Director of LUPE Arte.

LUPE Arte will have Master Presenters: Naiti Gamez (Film) graduate film student from the University of Texas and recent winner of the Texas Filmmaker’s Production Fund Grant for her effort “Sadie”.  Erica Saenz (Theater) co-founder of the Latino Comedy Project, UT Theater graduate and currently in UCLA’s MFA Playwriting program while coaching acting and writing with East LA Classic Theater’s youth programs. A Leadership workshop will kick off the Seminar headed by Jeanniffer Burnes, graduate from the International Business program of the University of Monterrey. By partnering with the Austin Public Library LUPE Arte will serve students from Keeling Middle School and other area young women.

An inspiring closing of the event will be provided by the presentation of the stage play, “She Flies” adapted for the stage by playwright, Mike D. Garcia from a short story written by award winning author, David Rice.  Singer Song-Writer Myrna Cabello will be in attendance to speak to the group and introduce the play.  LUPE Arte re-unites Mike D. Garcia, Founder of Nushank Theater Collective and the rest of the Nushankers in Austin to present “She Flies” for the Seminar.  This play about a young woman who overcomes the obstacles of socio and economic disadvantages to get into an Ivy League school has toured the country in the last four years reaching over 10, 000 students nationwide in areas such as The Rio Grande Valley and Austin, Texas, Albuquerque and Las Cruces New Mexico, Miami, Florida and Washington, D.C.  A question and answer with the playwright Mike D.
