Presentation of “She Flies” for Old Pecan Street Festival

Presentation of the Stage Play, “She Flies” for Old Pecan Street Festival
Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, 2008 Sat. 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
Downtown, Austin, Texas

“Fly as far as your wings will take you Milagros…”

“She Flies” is the story of a young woman’s struggle between doing what her parents want and pursuing her desire for something greater. The play is a day in the life of Milagros at her high school. Milagros is a hardworking, studious, senior with dreams of success beyond her hometown.
Mike D. Garcia, artistic director of Nushank Theater Collective, adapted the play from David Rice’s short story of the same name, which appears in his award winning, young-adult story collection Crazy Loco (Penguin Putnam). Since its initial performance in March 2003, Nushank has presented “She Flies” to more than ten thousand students all over the country.
Starring in the production are Marita De La Torre, Mike D. Garcia, Douglas Costello, Pentyi Samqui and as a very special treat, David Rice with music by Brian Ramos of the band, KANKO and former member of Grupo Fantasma.

“We are thrilled to bring this funny yet very inspiring play to the Old Pecan Street Festival; we are very honored that Mr. David Rice himself has actually agreed to play one of the characters in the play as a symbol of his commitment to enrich the lives of young students while bringing good, fun entertainment to the Festival as well”, says Marita De La Torre, Executive Director of LUPE Arte and performer in the show.

She Flies was first produced in 2003 as an educational initiative produced by the Gear Up Foundation at the University of Pan American in Edinburgh, Texas for the students of the Rio Grande Valley.  David Rice partnered up with Nushank Theater Collective and Co-Founder Mike D. Garcia was commissioned to write the stage play; Mike kept the inspirational message and added comedy, a little slam poetry and  music to make the play fun and appealing to any audience.

During that first tour of the Rio Grande Valley, She Flies received national attention and since then it has presented in cities such as Washington, D.C., Albuquerque and Las Cruces, New Mexico, Austin, Texas and Miami, Florida.

LUPE Arte is proud to bring She Fliesback to Austin in 2008 for the Old Pecan Street Festival.
